from across the bay to around the world, the stories that matter on "kpix 5 news this morning." >> and pagan gets hit so that is how this game gets started. >> good morning, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:00. and we're going back to our breaking news in san jose. kiet do is on the scene of a fire that apparently started with an explosion this morning. kiet. >> reporter: good morning. some terrifying moments for some rest didn't out here on the alameda just off of 880. this yellow building that you're looking at is a law office and this is where this whole thing happened about an hour ago. they heard what sounded like an explosion or gunfire. we have cell phone video of a gas meter explosion rupture. the neighbors ran out to the balcony shot some cell phone footage of this. they said it was shooting 10 to 15 feet in the air, called 911. when the firefighters got here they said it looked like a ball

of fire. they were able to turn the gas off at another location and let it bleed out. the fire department did a good job of keeping the flames from spreading to the near every nearby buildings. they did evacuate the apartment complex next door for some time. we spoke with a man by the name of thomas. >> glad the fire department got here when it did. the flames were high. >> reporter: how do you attack a ball of fire? >> well, we do we just -- we're at a distance. we try to put our nozzle on the fog pattern to protect us and we just try to protect the areas around it, any exposures, buildings, fences, anything that could catch fire, we wet it real good and let the gas basically burn itself out with a ball of flame. >> reporter: all the residents are allowed back into their homes. the fire department was in and out of here in an hour and 15 minutes and the traffic on the alameda is clear in both directions. >> yeah, quick work, kiet.

how about a cause? any determination on that yet? >> reporter: not yet. they typically send out the arson investigators once the sun comes up so they are not sure if it's accidental or some kind of intentional cause with foul play. they will have to wait and see. live in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. pg&e is facing it biggest fine of its kind in state history. judges with the state public utilities commission proposed a $1.4 billion penalty for the san bruno pipeline explosion. they ruled pg&e committed nearly 4,000 violations in the years leading up to the 2010 blast that killed 8 people. san bruno officials are upset that nearly $1 billion of the into fine would go to the state's general fund rather than for pipeline safety. labor day has come and gone. that means everybody is back to work and our elizabeth wenger is a busy lady today. >> it's back to school this week. you can tell really everyone kind of finally back in class because our drive times have been longer, the commutes are

and we are going to keep you on the roads at 6:48. >> it's been busy. we have another multi-car crash and unfortunately, this one is reported in walnut creek. a couple of lanes are blocked and chp is saying 6 or 7 cars are involved in this accident. southbound 680 approaching treat boulevard a couple of the left lanes are blocked and you can see it's slowing on 242 as well backed up almost to highway 4. all lanes are back open a couple minutes ago northbound 17 at laurel road. there were three separate accidents. as many as a dozen different cars involved in the crash. so again, both lanes just reopened. that traffic alert just canceled. it's going to take a while for this to clear out, though. we are seeing the delays back to scotts valley nine miles to get through the backup. delays are obviously pretty extensive in that area. bay bridge toll plaza metering

the santa cruz mountains where it is socked in. very little coastal clearing today. no change in the forecast at least for the next seven full days. and near normal temperatures all week long. in fact, futurecast, what we're looking at is what we typically would be experiencing in the month of june and july. clouds still hanging very tight right there. can you see it? all the way through the central district through moss, montera beaches all the way to pacifica. inverness and bolinas socked in all day. inland the abundance of sunshine, temperatures near normal. this area of low pressure, that is enhancing the marine layer. that's projected to kick in east. as it does so, we'll still have the damage done with the marine layer. okay, sunrise 6:40, sunset 7:38. today 60s, 70s and 80s. that's where we should be for this thursday the month of september. notice each and every day a degree or two change and that
